You finally made it to Germany, but this is still the beginning!

In this article we will take you through all the steps you will take until you are settled as a medical resident in the specialty you choose.

If you still don’t know how to reach Germany, read our post titled “So you decided to choose Germany for your medical specialty, What next?”

First, pass the B2 language test in Germany.

You may have already finished B1 or at least A2 before traveling to Germany, however, you have to pass level B2 before being able to apply for any job as we have mentioned in our previous post.

It is worth mentioning that some cities like Frankfurt requires a special language test held at a certified language center they refer you to (not the ordinary B2 test). But rest assured, it is still a language test, just with a different name to it.

Second, pass the medical terminology test

This test is an oral test that evaluates your ability to communicate medical terms in German that patients can understand. For example, you have to be able to explain procedures you will do to the patient in German.

The medical terminology test includes three parts:

  • Arzt Patient Gesprache– Doctor to a Patient conversation
  • Arztbrief– Medical Report
  • Arzt Arzt Gesprache– Doctor to doctor conversation

This test usually takes three months of preparation.

Third, the temporary German license internship period

So now with your B2 level and medical terminology tests passed, you are ready to start working in a hospital in what is called the temporary German medical license, which is only valid for two years.

In this period, you work in a hospital and make an income while you prepare for the permanent medical license exam.

In this period, it is advised that you choose a hospital with low competition rates in a small town (not Frankfurt, unless you want to wait forever). For example, nursing home or internal medicine faculty not surgical.

This period is a good chance for you to improve your skills, get used to German society, practice your language and learn medical skills you didn’t learn in your home town. In Germany, the doctor’s work is slightly different in some areas than what you may be used to, for example, you are the one who would be responsible for placing cannulas and drugs not the nurse.

We mentioned this period is valid for two years, however, you don’t have to wait for that much, if you feel ready you are allowed to apply for the permanent medical license after a year.

But make sure to reserve for this test ahead of time since it is only held at specific times of the year, you can’t suddenly decide to have the test next month, if you want it next month you probably would better have reserved the previous year.

A side note:

In some cases, you may have not to take the permeant medical license test and move directly to the residency

When does this happen?

If you are excellent enough in your temporary period, that you make your senior trust you and decide to have you complete with them.

For thisYou must have any qualifications gained abroad deemed equivalent to comparable German qualifications before applying for the permanent medical license without a test.

Fourth and finally the permanent medical license test

This test is a general medical exam in which you are tested in all medical fields: internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics…etc.

After this exam, you are ready to rock the residency and apply for any specialty you like and whatever hospital accepts you.
