International medical scholarships are among the most important opportunities contributing to the development of healthcare capacities in communities facing limited resources and political and economic challenges. In the Palestinian context, the Amiri Scholarship Program for Palestinian Doctors stands out as a distinguished initiative aimed at supporting newly graduated doctors and enabling them to obtain high-level specialized training in an advanced medical environment. This report aims to introduce medical students to this scholarship, explain its nature, requirements, application process, and professional significance.
The Amiri Scholarship Program for Palestinian Doctors is a specialized medical training program directed at Palestinian physicians. It is implemented through Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in the State of Qatar, in partnership with the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), and is directly funded by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar.
The program aims to provide advanced medical training opportunities for Palestinian doctors in selected specialties within internationally accredited hospitals, with a focus on building medical professionals capable of transferring the acquired expertise to serve the Palestinian healthcare system.
The scholarship targets Palestinian doctors who are graduates of internationally recognized medical schools, currently residing in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, and who wish to continue their specialty training through residency or fellowship programs in the State of Qatar.
First: Nationality and Residency
Applicants must be of Palestinian nationality, hold a valid Palestinian passport or Palestinian travel document, in addition to a valid Palestinian ID, and must currently reside in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank.
Second: Medical Qualification
Applicants must be graduates of a recognized medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), with graduation having occurred within the last six years from the date of application.
Third: Internship Year
Completion of an internship year or equivalent clinical training in a recognized hospital is required, or the applicant must be expected to complete it before the specified admission date. Observerships or non-accredited training programs are not accepted as a substitute for the internship year.
Fourth: Medical Licensure and Clinical Experience
Applicants must hold a license to practice medicine, or be eligible to obtain one in the State of Qatar, and must have practiced clinical work continuously during the year preceding the application, without any prolonged unjustified interruption.
Fifth: International Medical Examinations
Applicants must have passed one of the recognized international medical examinations, such as USMLE Step 2 CK, IFOM Clinical Science Exam, or MCCQE Part 1. The exam result must be uploaded with the application, as late submission is not permitted.
Sixth: English Language Proficiency
Applicants are required to submit a valid English language proficiency certificate, such as TOEFL, IELTS, or OET, meeting the minimum required scores for each test.
The available specialties vary from one cohort to another according to program needs, but they commonly include core medical specialties such as Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Radiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, and Intensive Care. It is important to note that the number of seats available per specialty is very limited—often not exceeding one seat—making the competition highly competitive and merit-based.
Applications are submitted through the official online platform of Hamad Medical Corporation (SMApply). The process includes several stages, starting with creating an online account, completing the initial Eligibility Quiz, followed by filling out the electronic application and uploading all required documents before the deadline. Applicants must ensure the accuracy and completeness of all information, as applications cannot be edited after submission.
Importance and Professional Impact of the Scholarship
The Amiri Scholarship Program represents a distinguished professional opportunity, as training is conducted at Hamad Medical Corporation, one of the largest and most prominent healthcare institutions in the region, accredited by international bodies such as ACGME International and the Joint Commission International. This enables Palestinian doctors to gain advanced clinical experience and exposure to the latest medical protocols, positively impacting the quality of healthcare services in Palestine upon their return.
In conclusion, the Amiri Scholarship Program for Palestinian Doctors represents a leading model of healthcare and educational support, and a genuine opportunity for medical students and newly graduated doctors to advance their professional careers in an advanced training environment. Early awareness of the scholarship requirements and systematic preparation can constitute a decisive step in shaping the future professional path of Palestinian doctors and enhancing their service to their communities.
