Systematic Review training Program Aim
: This training program provides an introduction to systematic reviews, aimed at medical students and clinicians who want to understand how to use a systematic review in their practice and how to conduct systematic reviews. It covers the basic concepts of a systematic review and a meta-analysis, how to critically read and appraise the quality of a systematic review, search strategies, interpreting the results of a systematic review, and how to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis. No previous experience with conducting systematic reviews is required.

At the completion of this training program, there will be an opportunity to join the ‘systematic review working group’ – a capacity building program for a group of committed highly skilled participants who receive hands-on training and conduct systematic reviews under the supervision of Assistant Professor Loai Albarqouni.

What Will You Learn?

  • 1. Describe the main steps in conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.
  • 2. Construct an answerable well defined question using PICO framework
  • 3. Identify the process of screening studies and extracting data from studies.
  • 4. Assess the risk of bias in included studies using appropriate tools.
  • 5. Describe and interpret the results of meta-analyses.
  • 6. An opportunity to be involved in a ‘systematic review working group’ supervised by Dr Loai Albarqouni - to conduct high-quality systematic review and meta-analysis. In additon to have an oppurtunity to be part of Internatioanl reseach teams.
  • 7. To understand the need for systematic (rather than unsystematic) reviews.
  • 8. To understand the advantages and dangers of meta-analysis.
  • 9. To be able to critically appraise a systematic review.
  • 10. To be able to interpret the different types of plots and statistical outputs of meta-analyses.

Course Content

How to read and interpret a systematic review and meta-analysis
Be able to: Understand the role of systematic reviews in evidence-based healthcare, and Critically appraise and interpret a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Formulating a research question
Be able to: Convert your clinical scenario into an answerable clinical question using PICOS framework.

Searching skills
Be able to: Construct appropriate search strategies for literature that is efficient and relevant to the review question.

Selection of studies
Be able to: Identify eligibility criteria for literature that will identify studies most relevant to address the review question, and understand the process of title and abstract screening as well as full text screening.

Risk of bias assessment
Be able to: Use common risk of bias assessment tools such as Cochrane Risk of Bias tool.

Data extraction
Be able to: Extract data from primary studies relevant to the review question.

Data synthesis
Be able to: Synthesize extracted data to form conclusions and answer the review question; and know how to conduct meta-analysis.

Writing up
Be able to: use reporting guidelines to adequately report the results of your review.

Timeline
The Program will take place at the End of March/ the start of April. The registration will be opened for 2 weeks, and the selection process will take some efforts and time.

Our Program speaker
Assistant Professor Loai Albarqouni MD, MSc, PhD, NHMRC Emerging Leader Fellow. Dr Loai Albarqouni is an Assistant Professor and NHMRC Emerging Leader Fellow at Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare, Australia. Dr albarqouni leads the teaching of evidence-based medicine and evidence synthesis in the medical program and postgraduate training at the institute. Dr Albarqouni has an exception track record and extensive experience in health research and clinical epidemiology - with>60 peer-reviewed publications (~55 in the last 5 years); >70% as leading or senior author in major international journals Lancet, JAMA, BMJ, JAMA Int Med, and MJA. Dr Albarqouni is on the editorial board of major international journals BMC Medicine, BMC Primary Care, and PLoS Global Public Health. His research expertise includes evidence synthesis, evidence-based practice, primary healthcare, global health, and low value healthcare (overdiagnosis and overtreatment).
