Mentorship Program Scheme – US pathway

Vision:
To have everyone mentored by MD Guidance Mentorship program matched to his/her pathway. 

Goal:
Is to provide a support system for Palestinian medical students and fresh graduates who are interested in a particular residency pathway by:

  • Guiding 25-30 students in regarding to their post-graduation pathways, within an initial period of 6 months that will be extended based on the evaluation.
  • ⁠Helping the students in networking with people who have gone through all the way.
  • Helping in supporting the student’s CV by recommending and providing opportunities by the mentor and MD Guidance including research, conferences, courses,  and training. 
  • ⁠Help to fund the student and to reach out for more organizations/ people to support the student’s pathway costs. 

Target group:

  • 5th, 6th-year medical students, Fresh graduates/ Intern doctors once they have done USMLE step 1. 

Eligibility criteria:

  • 5th, 6th-year medical students, or internship/ fresh graduates. 
  • Has taken a step on the way.
  • Good motivation to join the program.

Structure:

  • Signal Group
  • Will need 2 groups, one for consultants/ mentors and one for students. 
  • The pairing process will be done in which each 1-2 mentees will be paired with their mentor.
  • Two contacts between the mentor and mentees at least should happen per month, the contact could be a meeting, email or WhatsApp message. 

Outcomes and assessment:

  • Providing USMLE step 2 study guide and mentorship. 
  • Guidance in terms of Matching and Visa application.
  • Reviewing the CV and Personal statement for the Match Application as needed. 
  • Guidance through the career!
  • Helping in Providing the needed workshops and courses.
  • Helping to network in the interview season and possibly securing residency interviews. 
  • Helping in securing the Elective, observership or clinical attachment training for them when available.

Evaluation and Assessment:

A form will be sent after at 0, 3 and 6 months asking about:

Month 0:

  • What’ your goal? 
  • What are you hoping to gain from the mentorship program?
  • What are the different challenges you’re facing?
  • How do you recognize this porgramm as a success? 
  • Any courses, workshops, or things you are looking for?

Month 3 and 6:

  • Where are you in relation to achieving your goals? Scale from 1-5
  • How satisfied you are with the mentorship experience? 
  • How often did you meet with your mentor 
  • What strength points do you want us to support in the program?

Vision:
To have everyone mentored by MD Guidance Mentorship program matched to his/her pathway. 

Goal:
Is to provide a support system for Palestinian medical students and fresh graduates who are interested in a particular residency pathway by:

Target group:

  • Fresh graduates/ Intern doctors once they have done PLAB 1. The average range to get the first job after booking PLAB 1 ranges from 8-12 months. 
  • Number of students: To get all the mentors in one group and to look for their capacity.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Last year or internship/ fresh graduates. 
  • Has taken a step on the way.
  • Good motivation to join the program.

Structure:

  • The used Platform for communication: Signal 
  • Will need 2 groups, one for consultants/ mentors and one for students. 
  • Each mentor could take up to 1-2 students or more depending on the mentor’s capacity. The mentor will be assigned to the students but he could use and send for the consultants group when help for his mentees is needed.  
  • The pairing process will be done in which each 1-2 mentees will be paired with their mentor.
  • Regular contacts between the mentor and mentees depending on their availability and the mentee’s needs. A minimum of three contacts are expected at the start, half way through, and at the end of the program. 

Outcomes and assessment:

  1. Signpost to PLAB 2 resource
  2. Maximize the chances of successful job application after their attachment by
  • Supporting them to access opportunities for clinical attachment 
  • If needed signpost to extra resources: like Communication skills courses/ videos on What will the first day for junior doctor/ FY2 be like, Terminology guidance, guidance on CV preparation, and interviews practice. 
  1. Signpost to funding opportunities when available.  
  2. Reaching out for human resources who can help them secure jobs.
