German citizenship and residence permit
What happens after your student visa expires?
Your student visa usually lasts for 3-6 months; after which you have to be enrolled in an educational institution or a job.
Then you will be allowed to apply for a temporary residence permit, which is called the blue card.
The blue card lasts for a maximum of 20 months, after which you have to apply for a permanent residence permit.
Criteria for applying for the permanent residence permit in Germany:
- Having a bachelor’s degree at least in a specialty like medicine, pharmacy…etc.
- Having a job in Germany with an annual income that is not less than 43 thousand euros.

German citizenship
So like vacations, we usually like to conclude our posts with the best parts!
As a doctor and after having the residence permit for 6 constitutive years of work (having a paid job), you are allowed to apply for German citizenship.
There is a simple test before getting citizenship, this test includes 33 questions about different topics related to German history, geography, and politics. I know you don’t like history or memorizing but relax it is general and easy. People usually pass it from the first time.
Note:
Under the German law you can’t have two citizenships so once you get the German citizenship you will lose yours however this has exceptions:
- If you are Palestinian, you can keep your citizenship since it is not considered official.
- If your country prohibits dropping your citizenship.
Congratulations, when you reach this you have made it! Now you can get all your rights as a German citizen.
