COVIDSurgery-3 Research

The COVIDSurgery-3 Research has two parts (you can participate in each or both of them): The papers that will arise from the projects will depend on which part that you contributed. So better to participate in both parts if you can.

Any hospital in the worldwide can participate in one or two components of COVIDSurgery-3 Research.

First Part:
– Patient-level component:
Collection of 30-day outcome data for all consecutive patients with peri-operative SARS-CoV-2 (positive PCR swab in the 7 days before or 30 days after surgery). No changes should be made to normal patient care/ follow-up pathways.

Its required to collect all operations for a period of 30 days for those patients, the period will be for 30 days during December 2021, January or February 2022.

A team will be composed of 5 students, one of them will be the leader, who is responsible to record cases in the Red Cap, organizing the team, and contacting the Supervisor. A supervisor should e invited to be part of the team.

Second Part:
– Hospital-level component:
Collection of aggregated case-mix data.

So CovidSurg-3 has two separate components:
• Patient-level component: Collection of outcome data for patients with peri-operative SARS-CoV-2.
• Hospital-level component: Collection of aggregated case-mix data. Hospitals in areas with low community SARS-CoV-2 infection rates can contribute towards this component.

**Patient-level component

Inclusion criteria, Patients should be included if:
• They underwent surgery performed by a surgeon in an operating theatre, AND
• They had a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR swab or rapid antigen test (if PCR swab is not available) within 7 days before or 30 days after surgery. Patients can be included regardless of whether a specific variant is suspected or unknown.

All consecutive patients fulfilling inclusion criteria across all specialties should be captured.

We expect that you will cover all surgical specialties with patients who are COVID-19 positive undergoing surgery.

Diagnosis of COVID-19 should be either within 7 days before surgery OR 30 days after surgery.

**Hospital-level component

One person can participate per 7-day data collection block (listed below). They should complete the datasheet capturing all patients undergoing surgery for one or more body regions listed below.
The collected data will be:
– Total patients operated during the week
– Elective cases cancelled on the planned day of surgery
– Patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in perioperative period
– Total patients operated during the week

The person will collect these numbers over a consecutive 7-day.
The person should agree to participate with the hospital lead to avoid data collection overlap

Data collection blocks

Collaborators should collect data during one or more of the following 7-day blocks (if appropriate, by agreement with the Hospital Lead, start dates for data collection blocks can be amended, maintaining data collection over 7 consecutive days):
• 3 January 2022 – 9 January 2022
• 10 January 2022 – 16 January 2022
• 31 January 2022 – 6 February 2022
• 7 February 2022 – 13 February 2022
• 17 January 2022 – 23 January 2022
• 14 February 2022 – 20 February 2022
• 24 January 2022 – 30 January 2022
• 21 February 2022 – 27 February 2022

You can choose any of these to collect data for it later on.

  • What makes this project unique:
    • The names of participants will be assigned as PubMed citable group-authorship.
    • Your name will be assigned in every published paper.
    • A Golden opportunity: It’s a great worldwide observational study that will be published in international Journals, and will be part of the surgical guidelines Inshallah.
    • A great opportunity for doctors who want to obtain Publications and develop their CV.
  • Important notes:
    • The research period will be between January and February 2022.
    • Please follow our messages via emails and reply as fast as you can to ensure you get your place.
    • Make sure that you are using a correct email, phone number and writing your name correctly.
    • You can participate in any hospital or private clinic fulfilling the terms of the targeted patients.
    • After singing up you will be contacted and invited to the COVIDSurgery-3 Research. The protocols and info-gathering tools will be sent to you.
