Opioid Prescription After Surgery: Research Project

Re 1 2024

Invitation to participate in a surgery research in the year 2022 about the post-operative use of opioids around the globe.

Re 1 2024

The research is considered a research and an audit at the same time. It requires the collection of the info of every surgical operation during two weeks (observational). The surgeries are chosen under the following rules and following up the cases for 7 days post-operatively either by phone or visits at the hospital.

The list of periods regarding the research:
* Period 1
4 April 2022 – 17 April 2022 (+7-day follow-up post-discharge)
* Period 2
2 May – 15 May 2022 (+7-day follow-up post-discharge)
* Period 3
30 May 2022 – 12 June 2022 (+7-day follow-up post-discharge)
* Period 4
27 June 2022 – 10 July 2022 (+7-day follow-up post-discharge)

The research is concerned with collecting data of patients aged 18 or above, with the condition that the patient has undergone one of the following operations:
Commoorthopedicorthopaedic, urological, or gynecological surgical procedures.
The list of operations will be drafted within the protocols later on.

Each patient will be observed for 7 days post-operatively. Any case taking opioids will be noted in a special sheet relating to the patient. Nonetheless, every patient will be registered and included whether he did or did not receive any sort of opioids. In addition, in case the patient has took a different type of analgesia post-operatively or has to get into another surgery, a specific sheet will be dedicated for noting such info.

Each team will be comprised of 5 members and one of them must be a Consultant/supervisor. If the hospital happens to be big then the cases data will be gathered depending on the specialty, i.e. a general surgery team or an orthopedic surgery team, etc. In case the number of patients is small then a single team has to do all the collecting (will be addressed and organized later on).

Each team has to choose its own leader. If you think you are qualified, then don’t be hesitant. The number of each team will be depending on the total number of participants.
It is a very excellent opportunity for those who seek publishing papers in fields of:
General Surgery / Anesthesia / Pain Medicine / Gynecological Surgery / Urology / Orthopedic Surgery

  1. Hello,
    I am willing to participate!
    But, is it a problem if our patients discharge on non-opioid medications?? most of our facility patients take opioids in the in-patient settings!

    1. Hello Alaa, Thank you for your interest in participation! we are happy to see this.
      You can participate, and any notes, drugs to be noted through the research.
      You can consider only the in-patients who take the opioids, as this is your hospital system.

      I hope that helps you.
